[ARCHIVED] Palos Verdes Reef Restoration Project

MSRP (400x250).jpg

The Montrose Settlements Restoration Program (MSRP) Trustees are seeking the public's review and comments on the Draft Environmental Assessment/CEQA Initial Study and Environmental Checklist for the Palos Verdes Reef Restoration Project. Please attend an open house to learn about the details of this newly-proposed project on Thursday, March 2nd at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, located at 31501 Palos Verdes Dr. W., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.

Through this project, the MSRP Trustees propose to create 40 acres of new rocky-reef habitat in the Palos Verdes area to restore limited hard substrate habitat. The project proposes to build the reef offshore of Bunker Point (near Trump National Golf Club) within the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the southeastern part of Santa Monica Bay.

The newly created reef will provide habitat for fish, marine algae, and marine invertebrates and create a productive rocky-reef ecosystem in an area with limited reef habitat. Historically, the existing reefs in this area were buried by heavy sedimentation from landslides, irrigation practices, and sewage effluent.

For this project, 70,300 tons of quarry rock would be placed on 40 acres of sandy ocean bottom within a 69-acre site located 0.3 miles offshore along the coastline abutting the Trump National Golf Club. Construction of the reef would be accomplished using equipment and materials brought to the site on barges.

The official public comment period for the Environmental Assessment document begins on February 21st and ends on March 22nd. The document is available for review on-line at the link below.
