Crane Ship off the Coast Related to Palos Verdes Reef Restoration Project
Please be advised that a large crane ship and barge that appeared off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes this morning near Trump National Golf Club are related to the Palos Verdes Reef Restoration Project.
The City was not informed of when work for this project would commence and has reached out to the appropriate agencies for more information. Staff has been advised that the crane and barge will apparently be in the area for the next 40-60 days.
This project by the Southern California Marine Institute aims to restore fishing resources that were destroyed by decades of chemical dumping off the coast. The project was approved by the California State Lands Commission in 2018 and the California Coastal Commission in 2019.
The City opposed the project due to its proximity to DDT- and PCB-laden sediments in the Santa Catalina Channel, and the potential for restored reefs to be covered by silt from the toe of the active Portuguese Bend Landslide.
Staff will continue to monitor this project.
