Don’t Let Your Guard Down: Do Your Part and Slow the Spread of COVID-19The L.A. County Department of Public Health reports that the county is experiencing a surge in COVID-19 transmission. We’re all in this together. Do your part to slow the spread of COVID-19 by staying home and practicing social distancing.
For anyone who participated in a gathering over the weekend celebrating or protesting the election results, especially one where there were crowds and where not everyone was distancing and wearing a face covering, it is so important that you take very seriously that you may have been exposed to COVID-19. Please quarantine for 14 days and, in particular, stay away from anyone who is at increased risk for serious illness from the virus. This includes elderly family members and friends with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
Public Health also encourages you to get tested for COVID-19. There continues to be plenty of capacity for testing across the county, and anyone can make an appointment to be tested at covid19.lacounty.gov.

Supervisor Hahn Recommends Using Schools for COVID-19 Vaccination SitesThis week, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved a motion by Supervisor Janice Hahn exploring whether local schools should be used for possible vaccination sites when a COVID-19 vaccine is available.
Supervisor Hahn recently met with LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner who stated a willingness to use LAUSD schools to vaccinate L.A. County residents.
The motion passed on Tuesday directs the Department of Public Health to work with L.A. County school districts, city partners, and relevant community partners to explore the feasibility of partnering with schools for use as vaccination sites, and report back to the board in 30 days.
The Department of Public Health has released a report on Supervisor Hahn’s request that the department develop a COVID-19 vaccination plan. That initial report can be found at: http://file.lacounty.gov/SDSInter/bos/supdocs/148877.pdf

CDC Says Face Masks Also Protect Wearers from COVID-19On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a scientific brief noting that face masks offer protection from COVID-19 to people wearing face masks, in addition to those around them.
In the brief, the CDC said “studies demonstrate that cloth mask materials can also reduce wearers’ exposure to infectious droplets through filtration, including filtration of fine droplets and particles less than 10 microns.”
The brief noted that the relative filtration effectiveness of various masks has varied widely across studies, but that multiple layers of cloth with higher thread counts have demonstrated superior performance compared to single layers of cloth with lower thread counts.

Tips to Share Rides Safely During COVID-19If you share rides with people who don’t live with you, there are ways for you to reduce your risk of exposure to the COVID–19 virus while riding in a car, van or bus. Here are some tips from the California Department of Public Health for healthy ridesharing: - Wear a face covering at all times and don’t ride in a vehicle if the driver or other passengers are not wearing face coverings that cover their nose and mouth
- Try to sit as far away from others as you can, six feet apart if possible
- Open the car or van windows (or set the air ventilation/ air conditioning on non-recirculation mode)
- Wash your hands before and after your ride
- Try not to talk with others too much – talking can spread the virus
- If you have hand sanitizer, bring it with you in the car or van and use it if you touch a frequently touched surface
- Try not to eat or drink while riding in the vehicle
- Cover your mouth if you sneeze or cough
- STAY HOME if you are sick

Where L.A. County StandsWith widespread community transmission, L.A. County’s daily case numbers continue to keep us in the state’s most restrictive purple tier (Tier 1) in the Blueprint for a Safer Economy. Currently, L.A. County's adjusted case rate is 7.6 new cases per 100,000 people. This is a slight increase from the 7.5 adjusted case rate reported last week. The county must reduce its daily number of new cases to 7 or fewer new cases per 100,000 people for two consecutive weeks in order to move to the next less restrictive Tier 2. The county's overall test positivity rate is 3.8% which meets the threshold for Tier 3 and the test positivity rate in our lowest-resourced areas slightly decreased from 6.8% to 6.5% which still meets the threshold for Tier 2.
