February 21, 2023 Mayor's Honoree: Mr. Christopher Gastelum

On February 21, 2023, the City Council proudly recognized Mr. Christopher Gastelum for his efforts raising funds for cancer research and increasing access to advanced treatment options.

Chris, a Palos Verdes High School sophomore, was inspired to become a candidate for the 2023 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Student Visionary of the Year to honor the legacy of his father, who died of colon cancer in 2021.

As part of his Student Visionary of the Year candidacy, Chris has planned several community fundraising events and contacted local businesses to increase awareness and raise support. His multi-generational team is called “Together Against Cancer” because no one should have to face cancer alone. Chris’ team has an ambitious goal to raise $50,000 by April 14, 2023, to help find a cure for cancer and spread hope to cancer patients and their families.

The City thanks Chris for inspiring us with his initiative and leadership.
