City Council Meeting Highlights

Highlights from the May 21 City Council meeting:

• The Council approved measures to improve traffic flow on Western Avenue. These include upgrading 13 key traffic signals with synchronization technology, modifying traffic signal phasing, adding turn lanes, extending turn pockets, and prohibiting left turns when exiting two shopping center driveways. 
• The City has received $1.3 million in Metro grant funding for design and environmental review for the project and anticipates being awarded another $3 million for construction.
• A final project design is expected to be completed in March 2025 and construction could begin in September 2025 and last for one year. 
• City staff will continue working with Caltrans to determine if flashing yellow arrows are justified for northbound Western Avenue at Peninsula Verde Drive and for Western Avenue at West Park Western Drive.
• The Council also supported 14 bills moving through the state Legislature aimed at modifying measures related to theft, shoplifting, repeated offenses for associated crimes, and penalty enhancements.
