City Council Meeting Highlights

Highlights from the October 15 City Council meeting:

  • The Council received an update from City staff on the status of the Civic Center Master Plan project to potentially prioritize the redevelopment of the emergency-zoned area of the Civic Center project, which was given to the City by the federal government.
    • The federal government U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved the revised plan for the emergency-zoned area that would improve the City’s emergency response management and includes an emergency operations center, incident management command center, emergency evacuation area, emergency supply storage and staging, and other features.
    • However, the federal government recently gave the City a deadline of approximately four years to complete the emergency components to remain compliant with deed restrictions.
    • While the City will seek a deadline extension from the GSA and FEMA given the landslide emergency, the Council directed City staff to hire a project manager to begin the process and complete the project on time.
  • The Council received an update on wireless telecommunications facilities and efforts to improve cell service throughout the City and address poor wireless reception, dropped calls, and/or no service in certain areas. City staff will meet with the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association and wireless carriers who are active in RPV to determine if there are any changes to the municipal code that would result in improvements in service and reliability. Any proposed changes to the municipal code are expected to be presented to the City Council within 3-4 months.
